Free Pattern - Spiky Granny Bunting

This week on Free Pattern Friday I am happy to bring you one of my own patterns I recently wrote just for this blog - I call it Spiky Granny Bunting!

I call it 'Spiky' as it has picot edging added down 2 sides of each triangle, to make it a little different.

For this project I used Hobbycraft Women's Institute Soft & Silky, a 100% microfibre acrylic. I actually bought the yarn in my local Hobbycraft at the weekend even before setting out to make bunting from it - but as soon as I'd tried it out I knew it would be perfect for this type of project. Like the name suggests - it's so silky and soft - I mistook it for cotton when I saw it on the shelf!

I made this bunting up over a couple of days, but if you were working on it all in one go you could easily have it finished in a few hours. The pattern I have written out below is for a length of bunting 5 triangles wide, but you can easily add more or less to suit your needs.

So without further-a-do, I give you the Spiky Granny Bunting - I hope you enjoy it! <3 p="">

Spiky Crochet Bunting

You will need:

• 4ply or Double Knit yarn in a variety of colours (I used 5 contrasting colours and cream to join)
• Crochet Hook (I used 3.00mm with 4 ply yarn)
• Scissors
• Yarn/Embroidery Needle

Abbreviations (Please note my patterns are written in US terms)

• Ch - Chain Stitch
• SlSt - Slip Stitch
• Sc - Single Crochet
• Dc - Double Crochet
• Picot - Picot Stitch (Ch 3, SlSt into front post of first Ch)

Step 1

Start with your joining colour, and Ch 5, SlSt into 1st Ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (Counts as 1st Dc now and through out pattern), Dc 2, Ch 3. *Dc 3, Ch 3* x 2. SlSt to top of beginning Ch 3 to join. Break Yarn.

Step 2

Attach Contrasting Colour 1 to one of the corner spaces and Ch 3. Dc 2, Ch 3, Dc 3 in same space. Ch 2 (You will be chaining 3 in each corner space and 2 along the sides). *Dc 3, Ch 3, Dc 3 in next space. Ch 2* x 2. SlSt to top of beginning Ch 3. Break Yarn.

With me so far? :) It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it - almost the same as a granny square, but it's a triangle :P

Step 3

Attach Joining Colour to a corner space and Ch 3. Dc 2, Ch 3, Dc 3 in same space. Ch 2. Dc 3 in side space, Ch 2. *Dc 3, Ch 3, Dc 3 in corner space. Ch 2. Dc 3 in side space. Ch 2* x 2. Join to top of beginning Ch 3. Break Yarn.

Step 4

Attach Contrasting Colour 2 to a corner space and Ch 3. Dc 2, Ch 3, Dc 3 into same corner space. Ch 2. *Dc 3 into side space, Ch 2* twice. *Dc 3, Ch 3, Dc 3 into corner space. Ch 2. *Dc 3 in side space, Ch 2* twice* x 2. Join to top of beginning Ch 3 space. Break Yarn.

Step 5

Attach Joining Colour to a corner space and Ch 3. Dc 2, Ch 3, Dc 3 into same corner space. Ch 2. *Dc 3 into side space, Ch 2* 3 times. *Dc 3, Ch 3, Dc 3 into corner space. Ch 2. *Dc 3 in side space, Ch 2* 3 times* x 2. Join to top of beginning Ch 3 space. Break Yarn.

Now onto the boarder....

Step 6

Attach Contrasting Colour 3 to a corner space and Ch 1 (counts as 1st Sc). Sc 4 more Sc into the same corner space. Continue to Sc right the way around the triangle, making 5 Sc in each corner space. Join with a SlSt to the beginning Ch 1.

Step 7

Picot Edging

Ch 1. Sc 2, to bring you into the corners centre stitch. Chain 3...

... then SlSt into the front post of the Sc at the bottom of your Ch 3, to create a 3 chain picot stitch...

To continue - Sc 4, then add another Picot above the 4th Sc. Keep doing this until you reach the 3rd corner of your triangle. When there, Sc straight the way across to complete the boarder's straight edge. Break Yarn and sew in all ends.

You should have a picot stitch in the centre of each corner space :)

Joining the Bunting

Once you have made all your triangles (however many you like!), grab the Joining Colour yarn and Ch 25.

 Hold your first triangle with the right side facing you - straight side at the top. Sc across the entire top straight edge of the triangle to join.

Ch 10, and repeat the previous step on the second triangle. Keep doing this until you have joined all triangles, finally making another Ch 25 after the last one.

And you're done!
