My first encounter with crochet was when I was about 5, at my Nan and Grandads house. My Nan was a knitter, but also dabbled in crochet from time to time, and therefore had crochet hooks. She taught me how to make chains. I would sit for ages just making massive chains!
I got into crocheting proper in 2008 after seeing all the great amigurumi on Craftster.org. I looked through Youtube and found some great tutorials, including this one by WireMySoul. I also really liked mickeyssmail's tutes on making Granny Squares.
Another great website was Nexstitch, with easy directions and videos on all sorts of stitches and techniques.
