The Shakes

I'm ment to be doing a custom order at the minute for an Etsy customer. She wants a green Uniloomph - I've done about half of it's head. But I've been side tracked...

I've got the shakes! Not the drink - the physical shakes. Does anyone else get them?! I usually get them in the evening, around 7-9pm. And usually I'm crocheting when it happens. It's so annoying, 'cos I really need to get this order finished but I can't hold a hook properly or move my arms with any degree of control. I've asked my doctor about it and he more or less said it was in my mind lol. Like most of the things I ask him about - he has no idea.

So I decided to blog about the situaton - as I can type ok with the shakes. I was just wondering if anyone else has this sort of thing, and if it occurs when you're crocheting?!

  1. I used to get it (combined with feeling sick & headache) when I got home from school, due to being low on blood sugar caused by the gap from lunch time to before dinner.I used to find eating a piece of fruit (juicy preferably - getting water in is good too!) helped greatly. At the moment I eat a pear when I get home to avoid that low before dinner.

How do you eat usually? If you eat a big meal of foods high in sugar/carbs you can get quite a big dip a few hours after the meal too. I generally try to eat little and often throughout the day to avoid those dips.

Disclaimer - I'm no doctor and please don't take anything above as professional advice! Talking from my own experience :)

  3. I do occasionally but its usually just a stress thing for me. So it's not something that happens on a regular basis.

The funny thing is there can be all kinds of causes for something like that. If you get it at a regular time then it might have something to do with your routine.

  4. Also I'd try to see a different doctor if I could to get another opinion.

My mom used to have huge amounts of pain that would knock her off her feet for the longest time and often got told over and over again that it was all in her head.
She had to put up with that for over two years before someone finally figured out she had kidney stones and needed surgery.

  5. Thank you all for your help! :D I really appreciate it!

I thought it might be to do with blood sugar too - as it usually goes off after I've had a chocolate bar (it's my excuse to eat chocolate lol!) and I mentioned that to my doctor but he didn't think anything of it :( I'd like to see another doctor for a second opinion - can't hurt :)

Sarah - Yeah, I am a crochet machine lol! It's all I do!!

Kerry - I'm on a diet so I try to not eat too much for dinner - but my sleep routine is backwards (I go to bed at 6am and get up at 2pm) so dinner is the first real meal I eat :( Stupid - I know.

Lunar - That's awful about your Mum :( I'm glad she got it sorted out in the end :)

Thanks again! I'm feeling abit better now (nearly finished the Uniloomph...) :)

  6. I've never had such a problem but my first guess would be the blood sugar option.
You really are amazingly quick at crochet and there are no blemishes in anything you make.

My apple arrived just now. It's so adorable! Thanks for the stickers. The googlie lives next to candy, I'm going to use the stickers on my craft boxes.

  8. I definitely get this when crocheting amigurumi - not when doing granny squares or big loose stuff. I always assumed that it was me gripping hook, hunched up squinting at my tiny tiddly stitches LOL, then after a bit I can pick up my hook again.

  9. Thanks Vicky :) Glad it's not just me that gets this when crocheting! It's usually when I'm doing amigurumi too.
